We the “Safe Route Planners” are students of “COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus” from Pakistan. Currently in the final semester of our B.Sc. (Hons) Electrical Engineering program we established a team to make a final year project focused on disaster management. Our team was established at the start of September 2020 and the reason we decided to work together was because we all had a keen interest in finding a solution to the challenges faced by disaster response teams all over the world. We observed that, in our country Pakistan, the disaster relief services faced a plethora of challenges while rescuing civilians in the face of any natural disaster like an earthquake. They were not able to locate compromised individuals in time because they could not effectively navigate the perilous landscapes thus resulting in unfortunate loss of lives. So, our team after much deliberation and research decided to make a project that would send a surveillance drone to immediately survey the impacted region when a natural disaster occurs. From the livestream obtained, a software of our own design will implement a number of digital image processing techniques to formulate a safe path of the area that rescue services can follow to safely navigate the disaster zones. Therefore, the efficiency of the relief operations is maximized and loss of life is minimized. As we believe that our “Safe Route Planning for Disastrous Zones” project is one of great practical importance, we decided to compete in the “Technology for the Benefit of Humanity” competition under the banner of the Teknofest aerospace and technology festival. We realize that participation and success in this competition will result in great exposure for us, for our project and most importantly for our institution.
