Robotaxi-Full Scale Autonomous Vehicle Competition

About the Competition

Robotaxi-Full Scale Autonomous Vehicle Competition is organized within the scope of TEKNOFEST Technology competitions.

The goal of the Robotaxi-Full Scale Autonomous Vehicle Competition is to encourage participants to gain competence in the field of autonomous vehicle technologies, original design, algorithm and reporting.

High school, associate degree, undergraduate, graduate students and graduates can participate in the competition individually or as a team. Teams of high school students and teams of university and higher levels will compete in the same category.

The competition consists of two categories. In Unique Vehicle Category, which is the first category, teams participate in the competition by producing all vehicles from A to Z and producing software. In Autonomous-Ready Vehicle Category, teams run their software on autonomous vehicle platforms provided by TEKNOFEST.

In the final of the competition, it will be expected to perform various tasks autonomously in a real racetrack environment that is valid for both categories mentioned above.  The main purpose of the competition is to develop autonomous driving algorithms.

Within the scope of the competition, teams must prepare for 4 different stages: Preliminary Design and Simulation Report (PDR), Preliminary Design and Simulation Presentation, Critical Design Report (CDR) and Vehicle Test Video. In the first stage, teams are expected to accomplish the given task in a simulation environment and prepare a Preliminary Design and Simulation Report (PDR) that includes the simulation results. After this stage, teams will be invited to present their reports. In the second stage, the Critical Design Report will be requested. Teams that qualify for the final will be announced according to the results of the Vehicle Test Videos.

NOTE: Teams participating in the Efficiency Challenge Competition can also compete in this category. However, they have to apply separately from here.

Apart from the information given in the specification, you must be a member of the related mailing group from the link ROBOTAKSI - FULL SCALE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE COMPETITION for any questions you want to ask about the competition. The questions you will ask and the answers to these questions will be clear to the other members of the mailing group. The templates for the reports that the contestants need to prepare will be announced on the TEKNOFEST website in the future.

SIMULATION

Q: Can I watch other team's presentation videos? Is it possible to share the links of these videos?
A: No. The recording for the meeting is not shared.

Q: Do the brands of sensors used in the simulation environment have to be the same as those of the sensors actually used?
A: No, there is no such requirement. It is expected that the algorithms and software to be developed in the simulation environment (in case the teams are accepted to the competition) will be adapted to the real vehicle and used. The vehicles and equipment (sensors such as LIDAR, RADAR, Camera, GPS) to be defined in the simulation environment must be compatible with the vehicle design presented by the teams in the preliminary design.

Q: As written in the specification, in terms of the wheels being in the shell, do all the wheels have to be inside the vehicle shell, or can some of them be left outside? If so, is there a restriction for the outside part?
A: The outer surface of the wheel should not exceed the shell, ie the wheel cover surface and the shell can be on the same surface at most.

Q: Is there any restriction on the language of the signs we will use while preparing the simulation environment? "Stop" etc. Can signs with English expressions be used?
A: Traffic signs must comply with the standards of the General Directorate of Highways. Therefore, you should use "Turkish" sign.

Q: Is it free to use all the features of the environment we use for simulation? The vehicles we simulated can provide us some convenience (Line detection) such as road detection. Would it be a problem if we used them?
A: There is no limit. During the presentation, your command of the codes will also be evaluated. Originality in this area will bring more points. It will be useful to prepare a simulation with this awareness.

Q: Are what is required in the simulation as a concept, or do we need to run the software to be used in the vehicle directly in the simulation?
A: You have to run the software in simulation. You are expected to perform the tasks on the track. The data requested in the simulation are also specified in the specification. It may not be exactly the same, so minor changes can be made. However, you will also get points from this part.

Q: Can we use any tool we find on the internet by making modifications in the simulation as long as it complies with the rules in the specifications?
A: Yes, you can.

Q: Can we use ROS for simulation?
A: Yes you can.

Q: Should it be the same vehicle we designed in the simulation or are minor changes accepted?
A: Small changes can be made.

Q: If we make a small prototype instead of simulation besides the preliminary design report and bring it back, does it replace simulation?
A: No. Simulation is a very important part of this competition. Therefore simulation is required.

Q: Do all the tasks have to be done in a single track in the simulation without interruption? Or can we divide it into modules such as parking, passenger loading-unloading and use separate simulations that are not one piece?
A: For simulation, the team is expected to score at least 1500 points from Table 3. Therefore, you need to get 1500 points at a time in the video you upload.

Q: Based on the statement of all duties specified in the specification, for example, 15 of the 15 plates must be in the simulation and the vehicle must take the appropriate action, otherwise, there is a situation that you cannot pass the elimination even in the absence of a plate or a lack of detection?
A: You only need to complete a scenario (such as sample evaluations in the specification) with 1500 points, not all of the tasks.

PRESENTATION

Q: Which format should the ÖTR presentation be in? Which rule should we base on?
A: The presentation will be 5 minutes of presentation + 5 minutes of simulation + 5 minutes of questions and answers.

Q: Along with the research we have done on every subject we use, we have pages of documents that we have prepared ourselves. How detailed should the preliminary design report be? Should only brief information be given about the subjects requested in the report or should it be explained in detail?
A: Critical design report will be requested from the teams that pass the pre-design stage, as stated in the specification calendar. More detailed information is expected at this stage. Since an evaluation will be made according to the preliminary design report, it is useful not to keep the steps specified in the template short. The steps outlined in the template should be best explained.

COMPETITION AREA

Q: You stated that you provide accommodation for 6 people. But the team can be 10 people. By paying the fee, will the other 4 people stay together wherever 6 people will stay?
A: Accommodation will be in KYK dormitory and 4 people who come should arrange their accommodation as another place.

Q: During the competition, will Teknofest have an agreement with the accommodation of the competing teams? Or will each team take care of their own accommodation?
A: After the finalist teams are determined, information about transportation and accommodation will be given.

Q: How many meters will be the distance between the two road lines? What will be the turning radius in turns and intersections?
A: Due to the nature of the competition, we cannot share such information, including autonomy, with our contestants. The platform built has an infrastructure that can operate the systems of autonomous vehicles.

Q: How do we get the vehicles to the competition area?
A: The transportation of the vehicles is the responsibility of the competitors.

Q: Do you need to come to the competition area, the Consultant
A: For primary and high school teams, consultants must come to races. But there is no such requirement for university teams.

GENERAL SUBJECTS

Q: Are there any restrictions on the battery to feed the motor?
A: In battery system selection; Systems that are fully developed and proven, whose operation and sustainability are known to everyone or that do not contain any security threat should be used.

Q: Does the handbrake have to be hydraulic?
A: Hand Brake does not have to be hydraulic. All kinds of security points of the system you will use must be solid, stable and sustainable.

Q: Do the vehicle doors have to be glass?
A: Doors do not need to contain glass. However, this must be in a way that does not prevent the transparency of the compliance of the points specified in the specification of your entire autonomous systems.

Q: How exactly should the content of the Team Introduction file be during the application?
A: In PDF format, you can mention about the summary of the project, its purpose, year of establishment, competitions, if any, team member information and duties.

Q: Will a ready vehicle be given?
A: There are two categories in the competition. From these categories, you have to make the vehicle in the Unique Vehicle Category. In the Fully Equipped Vehicle Category, the vehicle will be given by the TEKNOFEST Committee.

Q: Can a consultant be the consultant of two different competitions (Robotaxi - UAV)?
A: Yes, it can be done.

Q: In the "Security Equipment (5.3)" part of the specification
"Vehicles that can participate in the autonomous vehicle category must comply with the vehicle specifications, safety equipment, Istanbul Teknofest TÜBİTAK Efficiency Challenge Electric Vehicle, the Activity Booklet (Rules) prepared for the Hydromobile vehicle, if they are in the Electromobil, Hydromobile category. equipment must comply with the contents of the Event Booklet (Rules) prepared for the Formula SAE competition. " has writing. But our team vehicle will not participate in any other competitions. Our vehicle consists of only chassis and shell. On this subject, which electronic circuits should be produced and integrated into the vehicle in terms of electronics.

A: TUBITAK Efficiency Challenge Electric vehicle must comply with the rules.
For example, no electronic components should receive rain water, the entire system should be a switch that cuts off all energy via both the remote control and the manual vehicle. This situation is specified in the specification. Condition of the brakes, stop lamp overcurrent protection to protect electronic circuits, etc. For the safety of your vehicles, it is required to apply TÜBİTAK Efficiency Car rules to the maximum.

Q: When we look at other competitions, it is seen that members can be recruited or removed until the critical design report is delivered. Is the same situation valid for this competition?
A: Regarding the Team Structure title specified in the Critical Design Report Template;
  • If there is an update on your team regarding the team structure, it is requested to be shared.
  • Here you must indicate the new members you have added to the team.
  • You do not need to specify if there are members or members you want to remove from the team. It is sufficient that you do not enter their information. The team structure specified in the CDR will be valid. No changes can be made in the team structure after the CDR stage. For this reason, it is important that you specify the final team structure in the Critical Design Report.

Q: Could you give information what is meant by "The wireless communication system should be explained."?
A: a) UMS-1: When the remote emergency stop button is pressed, the vehicle must perform an emergency shutdown.
   b) UMS-2: The vehicle must start its mission when the Go button is pressed.

Q: Must our vehicle pass through all roads?
A: There is no requirement to cross all roads. It is only necessary to follow the traffic rules to follow the proper route. Consequently, only one path will be possible (unique path).

Q: What should be the minimum distance between passenger loading and unloading stops?
A: The minimum distance has not been determined. However, the vehicle must move between the two points for a few seconds. Otherwise, the maneuver will be meaningless.

Q: Since the roads are one lane, should the traffic lights at the intersections stay on the right because the car is moving from the right?
A: It will be random. No limit has been set. It is expected that ready-made codes will not be created and a unique method will be made in this field.

Q: Will the roads be round-trip, is there a reverse direction?
A: There will be no reverse direction. You can simulate accordingly.

Q: Will the road be divided by any lines other than the lines at the edge?
A: The road will be in one piece. It will not be divided by any line.

Q: Will the traffic lights be 2 meters above the ground like others?
A: Yes, signs and traffic lights will be 2 meters above the ground.

Q: Which side of the road will the traffic lights be positioned at the intersection?
A: Turkey General Directorate of Highways will conform to the standard.

Q: Is there a usage limit for signs and traffic lights in every scenario where traffic signs will be positioned randomly?
A: It will be random. No limit has been set. It is expected that ready-made codes will not be created and a unique method will be made in this field.

Q: Where will the places at the start and finish line be on the sample track map specified in the specification?
A: When the race track is clear, its exact location will be specified. However, it will be in the lower left point of your simulation.

Q: Could you give a general information about the reports?
A: Within the scope of the competition, teams must prepare for 4 different stages: Preliminary Design Report (PDR), Preliminary Design Presentation, Critical Design Report (CDR) and Vehicle Test Video. In the first stage, teams are expected to accomplish the given task in a simulation environment and prepare a Preliminary Design Report (PDR) containing the simulation results. Teams will be invited to submit their reports from now on. In the second stage, the Critical Design Report will be requested. Teams that qualify for the final will be announced according to the results of the Vehicle Test Videos.

Q: When I apply to the technology competition, do I also apply for the support request, can you give information about the supports?
A: No. Applying to the contest and requesting support in relation to the contest he applied for are different things. The support requests of the teams will be received from the page that will be opened during report upload. Support applications will be evaluated by the Advisory and Evaluation Board of the relevant competition and the teams deemed appropriate will be supported. Applying for support does not necessarily mean that support will be received. After the financial support applications, the IBAN NO will be requested from the teams that are entitled to support and the support amount will be deposited into the accounts. It is not possible to provide equal support to the teams that are entitled to financial support. An upper limit will be determined after evaluating the support amounts and the materials to be purchased.
